“What do you do with all the rubbish?” he asked as he walked around our backyard.
“What you see as rubbish, I see as possible treasure.” I said. “I’ve been busy for the last few weeks. It’s part of a “keep myself busy” plan. Since times are hard, I try to keep myself busy doing what needs doing around the house. I am self-employed, well, unemployed, independent, and sometimes bored. Last week was clean-up week and the yard needed attention, so my son and I began to collect all the things we would no longer need to take them to the large dust heap (垃圾堆) outside the township building.
There was, of course, a hidden treasure in these things. My son told me that he had found something in the rock garden in the corner of the yard. After cleaning it up I found it was a tiny bottle, which looked like it once had a cork (瓶塞) in the top. Of course, my mind began to play with all kinds of possibilities. I wondered whom it belonged to and where it came from. Was it a gift from my brother to his sweetheart, or was it simply my dad’s salt bottle? I showed it to my neighbor as he walked around and challenged him with his idea.
“It’s rubbish! Look, there’s a piece broken on the top. I’d rather throw it away,” he said.
Rubbish? I don’t think so. Every time I see it, my mind will dance. I like seeing it as a gift I was given just because I found it. It can still hold something. It’s a little damaged, but it doesn’t mean it has lost its purpose. Like me. I’ve been damaged, broken and after all that I still have a purpose. So in the right hands, even a broken bottle is a treasure.
